The
second and third interviews for Toshi's episode of Listen To The City
Breathe happened about a week apart in August, two months after the
first interview at the dance studio.
I
couldn't think of a great place to go, so I asked Toshi if it was ok
to film at his apartment, way out in Queens. I found a nice angle
that I thought would be great for the interview, and shot.
There
were a couple of amateurish problems that I had with this footage.
First, after watching some professional documentaries, I realized
that I didn't want to use auto-focus on my camera, anymore. (Although
I did continue to use the other automatic settings.) I saw something
with basketball players, and whenever they leaned in, or leaned back
a little, they went out-of-focus. This told me that keeping a prime
focus was more important than always keeping the subject in focus.
The problem, of course, is that I didn't really know all the tools
that the a6000 had for using manual focus, like peaking. So, while it
looked like it was in focus, all of the footage was actually a bit
out-of-focus. But since I had such limited footage, anyway, I had to
use it. Lesson learned.
In
addition to keeping peaking settings on for manual focus, I also
learned how to use autofocus more effectively, but manually moving
the focus point around (instead of keeping it in the center of the
screen, trying to move it to the spot to where Toshi's face was, for
example).
